Topic: A conversation about fraud, waste and abuse

This session offers a practical, risk-based view of forensic auditing/accounting and cybersecurity. We will focus on forensic accounting techniques used to identify and investigate fraud risks such as misappropriation, fraudulent disbursements, vendor and payroll schemes, and general red flags. We will also discuss today’s cyber threat landscape for government and public sector entities, including ransomware, phishing and business email compromise, stolen credentials, third-party compromise, and some controls finance leaders can implement to mitigate risks.

Speakers: Fola Abiola-Banjac & Javier Young

Fola is a principal and Leader of the Forensics, Litigation, and Investigations group (FLI) at CLA. She is an experienced licensed attorney practicing as a forensic accountant with a specialization in serving Higher Education, Financial Institutions and State and Local Governments. Accomplished and results-driven, offering extensive expertise providing forensic, ethics, and regulatory compliance guidance to the leadership of public sector and private sector organizations, with extensive experience in forensic accounting investigations, document review, and the development of expert opinions. Fola has a demonstrated record of success investigating allegations of forensic activity, regulatory, and ethical violations. She leads client forensic investigation projects, managing large teams and offers a history of delivering solid results in a series of positions.

Javier is a Principal within the Cybersecurity Services Group at CLA and has been in the cybersecurity field for over 16 years.  Prior to joining CLA, Javier spent ten years supporting the Department of Defense as well as a financial services company in the fields of insider threat, incident response, fraud, waste and abuse, analytics, and systems engineering.  Since Javier has been with CLA, he has spent the majority of his time providing IT Security, Risk, and Consulting services to clients in healthcare, higher education, state and local governments and financial related institutions.
